I Get So Emotional, Baby (A Tribute Post)

Ain't it shocking what love can do? I know I went all Whitney Houston just now. But trust me, you'll know exactly why shortly.

We've come to another fork in the road, ladies and gentlemen. The Houston Astros just dropped 3 out of 4 to a Los Angeles Angels team that they have dominated all season. As Eric Huysman of Fansided's "Climbing Tal's Hill" so elegantly put it, "The 2016 Astros Playoff Hopes Are on Life Support." He's got a really good point on that, because the spacemen will have to run the table and win all remaining 6 games left in the season to have a shot at October baseball. They open up a crucial home stand, and their last of the season, tonight against the Seattle Mariners. This team is currently a half a game up on the Astros in the Wild Card standings, so anything short of a sweep will not work. Nor will anything but a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, which will be to end this season with a 3 game set this coming weekend.

In addition to the stress of trying to squeeze into the playoffs, there also came word yesterday morning of a fatal boat accident that killed young Marlins ace, Jose Fernandez. He was quickly becoming a legend in the making as far as major league pitchers go when his life was tragically cut short late Saturday heading into Sunday morning. In light of this, the Braves-Marlins game was cancelled, and outpourings of support came from around the league and across the country and world.

The most moving of all the numerous tributes came by way of two Astros players, both of whom are very important to the future of this team and close to my own heart. The first is from young sophomore starter, Lance McCullers Jr. with whom Jose was really close to. This was his pregame interview yesterday courtesy of MLB.com beat writer, Brian McTaggart:

Very sad to see Lance's reaction there at the end. The second came from none other than your people's champion and mine, Evan Gattis. El Oso Blanco had faced against Hernandez quite a bit in the NL East back when he was an Atlanta Brave his first two major leagues seasons. Here is what he had to say:

Very beautifully written words right there from Evan. Between losing Jose at such a tender young age of 24, the later-in-the-day passing of golf legend, Arnold Palmer, and my landlord losing a colleague of his own yesterday, death has certainly been lurking its ugly head around and stealing wonderful people away from this world. It is another reminder of our own mortality. Tomorrow is never guarantee, so it is important for every last one of us to cherish every single moment and every single person we are given in this lifetime. I know I do each and every day for my own family, friends and loved ones. I hope you readers out there remember to do the same.

And on that note, readers....I love every last one of you! Even those who may try to come at me negatively. I've always been a firm believer of the phrase, "Kill them with kindness." And I seek to do that every day that I am able to wake up in the morning. Despite yesterday's losses, life will and must find a way to go on. And let us all always find a way to love one another. Because, as the question posed by Whitney Houston in her song says, it really is shocking what love can do. It is also shocking what love will do if we all give it the chance it deserves!
