The Division Bell

This 1994 release from Pink Floyd was the second record to be headed up by lead guitarist, David Gilmour. One of the more spacier albums by the band, many of the songs were written by Gilmour as a means to slamming former front man and bassist, Roger Waters. Tracks like "Poles Apart" and "A Great Day for Freedom" highlight a new emergence for the band unlike any felt before. The ending track, "High Hopes," was especially perennial, as it served as only one of 3 singles from the album. Specifically, in the first verse, where Gilmour sings the following lyric....
"The ringing of the Division Bell had begun...."
Well, fellow Houston Astros fans, the team did just that yesterday in their series sweeping and division clinching victory against rivals, the Seattle Mariners. It is the first time in 16 years that the team has made it to the playoffs by way of a division crown. Their last 3 playoff appearances have come by way of the wild card. But now, the Astros have obtained one of hopefully 3 feats towards a world title.

Newly acquired All Star ace, Justin Verlander, was making his home debut yesterday as well. And boy, what a perfect time for him to throw a gem. 7 innings, 99 pitches, only 1 walk and only 1 earned run off of a solo shot from Ben Gamel. However, that would be all the Mariners could muster, as they also fell victim to 10 strikeouts across those inning frames. JV has a 0.86 ERA in 3 starts with the Astros, proving to all exactly why this team gave up so much to get him before the waiver wire deadline a few weeks back.

The BMac, Brian McCann, was also crucial in leading JV to his gem of a clinching victory. There was even a tweeted out video courtesy of Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle of the two of them dancing in the clubhouse. You can check it out below!:
Who says that BMac is no fun? Honestly, seeing this just warmed up my heart. Not to mention, this pic I found from a graphic of McCann as The Hulk while he came up to the plate on Saturday. The chemistry that all of these guys have had all season is an uplifting thing to have been able to see. Well, at least at times where I could actually see the games on TV without having to go over online highlights later on. But that's a story for another time.

And don't think for one moment that your people's champion and mine, Evan Gattis wasn't part of the celebration. He was shown on camera going around Minute Maid Park on the victory lap with the team. Additionally, Sports Talk 790 captured him in the background with a Budweiser and stogie in hand while they were interviewing George Springer. You can check out both of those video tweets below.

First, the victory lap:
Then, the clubhouse celebration afterwards:
The only thing I really found missing from the festivities was some kind of interview with Evan to get his thoughts on the clinch. I'm hoping maybe it was just because he was caught up in the moment. Either way, I won't get picky. The entire team is heading into October baseball, and I could not be more thrilled!

A friend of mine on Facebook even posted a pic on my wall of Gattis hugging it out with Bill Brown in the clubhouse. I found that just as equally uplifting as anything else I saw from the celebrations that took place. You can see for yourselves below:

I can't find the right words to express the overjoy that I am feeling in my heart for these guys achieving this feat. The victory lap is proof of just how lovable every guy on this team is. It's almost like they are an extended family to all of us in the fan base. When they succeed, it feels just like we all succeed along with them.

And after everything that happened with Hurricane Harvey just a few weeks back, plus the ongoing cleanup that will take some time to complete, the city of Houston definitely needed this. The boost in morale will certainly be felt over the next few days, at the very least. This victory by the Astros will be one that lasts for years to come and, dare I say, even over the course of our lifetime and the life time of the younger generations. This includes children, and even grandchildren.

So let's celebrate, Astros fans and the city of Houston! I say that because there are those, like yours truly, that don't live in H-Town at the present time. This win was definitely for all of us!
