Do You Know What That's Worth?

OOOH, HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH! I just couldn't help myself, readers. Hope you will forgive me that. But the question posing lyric from the 1987 hit from former Go-Go leader, Belinda Carlisle, is a song about hope and seizing the day, as well as life itself. Yes, it is also a love song. But as a gay men, you all should expect me to keep referencing flamboyant pop culture, especially from the decade of which I was conceived.

It also symbolically asks something very important relating closely to your people's champion and mine, Evan Gattis. And that is this: Do you know what he's worth?! If your still pondering the answer to that question, than you really have been living under a rock for years! Perhaps my latest piece from Fansided's House of Houston blog may help give you the skinny on the Big White Bear?!

That's right, Astros baseball novices. El Oso Blanco is having one of his best season starts since he was a rookie with the Atlanta Braves back in 2013. Funnily enough, backstop brother, Brian McCann, was on that same squad for his final season down in the jewel of the south. He would then head to the boys in pinstripe, the New York Yankees, the following year. Then, the year after that, the Braves traded Evan Gattis to Houston.

After 3 seasons apart, the two bearded bash brothers and wonder twins would be reunited again in H-Town. And as of right now, they are the best catching tandem in all of baseball. Feeding off each other's power hitting catcher selves, the combo of #BearSquared are hitting above the .280 mark, and drawing walks and driving in runs through extremely productive hitting. Brian McCann, the starter, is slashing .313/.414/.458/.872 in 14 games and 58 plate appearances. While Evan Gattis, the backup and occasional DH, is slashing .294/.405/.441/.846 in 12 games and 42 plate appearances.

Just look at what they both did in this past road series against the Tampa Bay Rays:

  1. Evan Gattis' first homer of 2017 is an oppo taco to right center field!
  2. In that same Saturday game, Gattis hits into a fielder's choice RBI to score Jose Altuve!
  3. In the finale Sunday, Gattis' sac fly RBI scores Yulieski Gurriel and ties the game in the 9th!
  4. In extras on Sunday, Brian McCann laces a go-ahead RBI single to right field!

On top of this, they are both really solid defenders. McCann has the edge with the glove, but Gattis still isn't any scrub of a backstop, either. Both of these players are apart of a team that has multiple weapons on offense to utilize. Similar to the Atlanta Falcons of 2016, before a disappointing Super Bowl loss. But let us not relive anymore nightmares, shall we?

The big question is how to get more time for the bear. And as I covered in my HOH post, skipper A.J. Hinch has got to do more to get him in that lineup. If he really is a man of his word, he needs to keep the promise he made back on the 19th, after a victory against the divisional rival, Los Angeles Angels:
“I’ve got to work harder to get him some more regular at-bats,” Hinch said. “It’s been hard with the DH spot going to Beltran most of the time. … I know when he warms up and starts getting some hits, the power’s going to come. He can do a lot of damage, but the two-out base hit to right — it’s hard to keep the ball fair inside the first baseman — proved to be a pivotal run as well.”
As of this writing, Evan Gattis is batting 8th as this evening's DH on the road against the defending American League Champions, the Cleveland Indians. So perhaps, maybe Hinch is seeing the light? Or is it perhaps just a belated birthday present to Carlos Beltran, now the big 4-0, to give him some rest? Turns out, Beltran will be playing left field tonight. Whatever the way, anytime the bear can play, it is always going to be a good game. And by extension, it's also going to be a good rest of the day!

Hinch will be a miracle worker in my eyes, if he can, somehow, get my bear buddy in the lineup more often. Make it happen, skip!!!!
