2015 Braves Coaching Staff Now Set....Which Players Stay or Go?
With the hiring yesterday of Kevin Seitzer of the Toronto Blue Jays as the new hitting coach, and Jose Castro from the Chicago Cubs as his assistant, the 2015 Atlanta Braves coaching staff is now set.
One final question still remains: Who will be on the roster next season?
So many trade rumors and talks continue to circulate as the debate over certain players and their place among the Braves in 2015 march ever forward. Cases have been made to trade Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, and yes, even Evan Gattis.
My trade candidates: BOTH BJ and Justin Upton.
My biggest reason for this is explained in the following chart put out by Tomahawk Take regarding the organization's player payroll projected for next season:
Notice that both of the Upton brothers will account for 27.7% of next year's payroll. Of course, BJ Upton is clearly being looked at to be gotten rid of by the Braves. It will be hard to do, considering how much he is guaranteed through 2017. The easiest solution to this is to find a way to trade both Uptons together. I, like many fans, would miss Justin and his bat. But moves do need to be made, and I see that as being one of the smartest and most efficient moves to make. The Braves can then free up the additional money to make a fair extension to Jason Heyward as the leading outfielder, and allow Evan Gattis and his bat to remain on the team and platoon between outfield (Yes Braves fans, I did, in fact, suggest that.) and catching backup for Christian Bethancourt, if the Braves are so intent on starting that kid.
Case in point, there are plenty of options to keeping Evan Gattis on the Atlanta Braves squad. The organization just needs to make more of an effort to do so.
