Decisions, Decisions

So it all comes down to today! Yes folks, election day has finally arrived. We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief when it is all over. Until then, I encourage you all to still go out and vote while there is still some time. If you really want your voice to be heard, then speak up!

The Houston Astros already did some speaking up yesterday. At the deadline to extend qualifying offers to the four players that are pending free agents, the ball club declined to do so. This means that Doug Fister, Luis Valbuena, Colby Rasmus and Jason Castro will remain free agents for the time being, and are now free to sign with whichever team they want.

"But wait," you may be asking yourself. "Wouldn't that mean that those four players are essentially no longer Astros?" Well, not quite. Because the team did not extend QO's, it is an indicator that these players are not worth the minimum $17.2 million required to make said QO. However, it does not forbade them from signing with the team if they still desire to come back. Hence, they can sign with ANY team, including the Houston Astros. It will just be for considerably less money.

There is still the possibility to get one of these players back, however highly unlikely. Jeff Lunhow has stated that he wants to try and bring back Jason Castro, if possible. This could hinder any chance that your people's champion and mine, Evan Gattis has of taking on the role of starting catcher next season. Whatever happens, El Oso Blanco will still be part of the team, since they picked up his option. The organization "voted" to keep him and his salary on the roster, if you will.

There are plenty out in the Astros' media that said this was to be expected or a "no-brainer." But truth be told, nothing is ever certain in this sport. Lunhow could have just as easily traded Evan off for some exquisite package from another team, heaven forbid. Just as well, they could have also just decided to decline his option and let him go to free agency. Either of those decisions would have been disastrous.

But thankfully, Lunhow and company made the right choice here. And I now feel confident in whatever other decisions they will need to make this winter to make the team stronger. The Houston Astros organization most certainly has my vote to go far into the post season in 2017! I still believe they can bring that trophy to H-Town in the coming year. Also as a side note, Jose Altuve is an AL MVP finalist for 2016, and I hope the BBWAA votes him the winner!

Gattis/Altuve 2017: The perfect ticket and choice for any team....as well as AMERICA!!!!
