The Sheer Animosity of Braves Fans

Let me start by saying that this is a generalization, and I intend no disrespect to any particular person. But some of the message boards for Braves fans that I have been on lately have just been downright preposterous.

Permit me, if I may, to share one particular thread with you. For ethical purposes, I will not reveal the name of the site or anyone that runs it. However, this is a perfect example about how Braves fans are being unnecessarily cruel, not only to Evan Gattis himself, but to true fans like me who defend him regularly. Please note my screen name in bold.

You be the judge:

I'm of at least three minds on Gattis

I do think he has the potential to lose a lot of value before the trade deadline if he gets hurt again. Staying at catcher increases the chance he’ll get injured. Moreover, maybe what he needs is more reps in left field to demonstrate that he can be merely bad out there rather than unplayable.

On the other hand, if they stick him in left field, they are more-or-less admitting defeat on the project of keeping him at catcher. That certainly will hurt his trade value.

On the third hand, Bethancourt is terrible on both sides of the ball, and I doubt he will ever amount to even a major-league quality backup catcher. Given that they have no backup plan at this point, maybe they should hold onto Gattis and plan on him being their starting catcher until he departs in free agency.

We all love EOB, but your comments paint him as some sort of messianic figure. I didn’t say it offended me, just that it’s a little creepy.

Then there is this one:

Another angle to the "trade value" idea

is that this protects Bethancourt’s trade value, should that be necessary. If he’s the starter, I’m more inclined to think he’d demolish his trade value and perception. If he’s a backup, you can at least use the small sample size excuse, and let teams dream on "raw" power and defensive skills that may have been overstated all along.

If it were me, I’d sign up for Gattis at catcher for the next 4 years, trade Bethancourt, and worry about catcher another time. I’m not convinced Bethancourt is ever going to deliver on the dwindling bit of promise he still has around him. Basically, I think every time you play him, he’s going to hurt his trade value.

Plus, by the time Gattis is out of his team control, Matt Wieters will be 32 and John Hart will be salivating over the thought of "bringing him home."

AND THIS ONE!:

Gattis needs to be moved

he is wasted on our team getting a day off 3 times every two weeks, with his size and back issues he is better served both as a player and for our team’s value by going to the AL where he can DH and catch and fill in 1b/lf…wtvr.

He is one back injury away from having ZERO trade value and zero playing value. let someone else take that risk.

I’ll just blog about how insane and distrusting some of you fans really are. After everything EOB has done for this team. I’m sickened by a lot of your attitudes.

taking him out back and shooting him.
by clashfan on Dec 11, 2014 | 2:57 PM up reply

what exactly has he done for this team?

You act like he’s effing Mike Trout or something. He isn’t, he’s a burly guy with lots of power and decent pitch framing skills. He’s old for his remaining control years, prone to injury and is better served in the AL where HE AS A PLAYER will better thrive.

IF you really are interested in what’s best for Evan you’d be on board with a trade that would send him to a place where he’d be more likely to perform at the highest level. The only reason to want to keep him here so rigidly is due to personal issues/obsession.

Yes, we all distrust and hate Evan Gattis…. only you can love him, truly, unconditionally.

Dude, you have seriously lost it. For the last time, I don’t speak for everyone here, but:

WE ALL LIKE EVAN GATTIS. We all enjoy watching him play for the Braves. We are all happy with him on the team. In fact, I would venture to say, that most of us do not want to see him traded (unless we get a spectacular return).

Just because we don’t see him as the second coming of Jesus Christ* does not mean that we are insane or distrusting of him.

Are you really that blinded by your obsession with him that you can’t see this?

*Sorry to bring a religious figure into the conversation

i really think we should keep Gattis, i mean don’t you guys love the way he flips his bat after every monumental home run he hits, even if we suck next year who the hell cares!, just think about it for a minute, Oso Blanco will be launching homers and bat flipping like crazy with those big sexy arms in our new hitters park just two little years from now, i really believe Hart should extend him.

Go Oso!

Keep in mind readers that this is only ONE message board thread, of which I subscribe to three of them. I understand the concept of "Haters Gonna Hate," but sometimes, it just gets abundantly ridiculous. Makes me wonder, if Braves Country really encompasses the a good portion of the south, then what are these mamas doing in NOT teaching these people manners? Whatever happened to southern hospitality?

The main thing I gather in all of these hateful things said about me or Evan is that these people have nothing or nobody in their own lives to be passionate about, so they take it out on me in that I clearly do have passions about certain things and people. Sorry if it offends or creeps some of you out that Evan Gattis just happens to be one of those people and players that gets me and a ton of other people and fans excited and hopeful about baseball and chasing after dreams. (as I am now with my screenwriting) SCRATCH THAT, I DON'T HAVE A DAMN THING TO BE SORRY ABOUT. I'M PROUD OF WHO I AM, AND DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE FOR A SINGLE SOLITARY PERSON! If you fans really want this Atlanta Braves ball club to win anytime soon, you need to think twice before getting so impulsive as to want to send Oso Blanco packing just to unload BJ Upton or get prospects that you have no idea whether they will or won't work out.

In short, Braves Country: YOUR COLLECTIVE ATTITUDES REALLY SUCK, SOMETIMES!!!!

Damn. I guess haters really are motivators, huh?!
